Our Congregational leader, Sister Teresa Maya has been elected today as President elect for the Leadership Conference of Women Religious (LCWR)

At its annual meeting held in Atlanta, Georgia August 9-13, the Leadership Conference of Women Religious (LCWR) elected Sister Teresa Maya, the Congregational leader of the Sisters of Charity of the Incarnate Word, San Antonio, to the office of President-elect.

Sister Teresa, a native of Mexico, has been a member of the Congregation for twenty years and has served in leadership positions in our schools in Mexico. She was a member of the leadership team of the Congregation for six years (2008-2014) and was elected Congregational leader in 2014. She has been a member of the Leadership Conference of Women Religious (LCWR) for the past eight years.

The LCWR is a national association of the leaders of congregations of Catholic women religious in the United States. The Conference includes about 1350 members who represent nearly 80 percent of the approximately 48,000 women religious in the country. Founded in 1956, it assists its members to carry out their service of leadership collaboratively to further the mission of Christ in today’s world.

The annual Assembly provides members opportunities for education, reflection on issues pertinent to leadership in religious life, networking, prayer and celebration. The Assembly members also vote for officers of the Conference and on resolutions.

LCWR addresses the causes of many significant social justice issues facing the global community, for example, immigration, human trafficking, climate change/environment, and comprehensive health care reform.

The Conference has a tripartite governance structure composed of the LCWR President, President-elect and Past President.
