Homily for Welcoming and Comissioning of
the General Leadership Team, 2008-2014

In one of the last emails Sister Walter sent before my coming to join you on this joyous occasion, she said something to the effect that this was a kind of homecoming for me. I wonder if she realizes how right she was. As I look out among you on this Sunday morning, memories flood back, not only of my grade school years at Our Lady of Mt. Carmel school in El Paso but also those of my later college ones, not to mention all that happened since then which connects me to your congregation. In my own prayer this morning, I was taken back to a few years ago when I brought my Mom and two sisters to visit your Motherhouse. As we toured your little museum and I noticed those long, black habits, and, in more recent times, those little hats worn in Peru which spoke to me of your openness to inculturation, I remembered vividly those boyhood days in my dusty, desert town...
