The Congregation of the Sisters of Charity of the Incarnate Word, San Antonio, has created a grant to support secondary and university school projects in the United States, Mexico and Peru to develop and implement projects to serve economically poor women by providing direct services or advocating for policy change that will directly impact women. In 2002, 23 applications were received from CCVI educational ministries, and 10 grants were awarded. This is a summary of one grant winner from the United States:
“Queen of Peace Blessing Baskets and Shower” – Incarnate Word Academy, St. Louis, Missouri
This winning grant resulted in purchasing needed items for expectant, underprivileged women served by the Queen of Peace Center in St. Louis, which provides healthcare for women with substance abuse disorders through treatment, education and housing. The high school student team worked together and bought maternity and baby items and delivered the gifts to the Center along with hand-written cards of encouragement and prayers to the women. Twelve of the women’s lives were touched by the use of the funds, and the Center’s staff informed the team that the women were most appreciative for their thoughtfulness and the gifts.
