Communities Not Cages: San Antonio Rises in Defense of Dignity and Due Process

San Antonio is preparing to join a nationwide day of action as community members gather to oppose the expansion of ICE warehouse detention centers and defend the due process rights of immigrants and all Americans. The event will take place outdoors, with parking available at Copernicus Park (5003 Lord Rd) and shuttle service provided to the gathering site.

This local action comes at a critical moment. Out of 23 proposed warehouse-style detention facilities across the country, only ten remain in development—and one of them is planned for San Antonio’s East Side, with a projected opening date of September 30. Organizers emphasize that the time to act is now.

Participants will come together to publicly oppose what they describe as a system that separates individuals from their families, legal representation, and communities. The demonstration aims to send a clear message: San Antonio stands for dignity, justice, and the rule of law.

The event invites attendees to raise their voices and take part in a collective call to action. Among the goals are to visibly resist the expansion of detention infrastructure, stand in solidarity with detained immigrants, and urge elected officials to uphold due process for all. Attendees are encouraged to bring signs, invite others, and participate actively in the demonstration.

This action is part of the broader Communities Not Cages National Day of Action, organized by the Disappeared In America campaign alongside a wide network of local and national partners. The movement has already seen significant impact, with more than half of the originally proposed detention sites halted due to public pressure and organized resistance.

Organizers stress that the event is grounded in a commitment to nonviolence. Participants are expected to act lawfully, de-escalate potential conflicts, and ensure the space remains safe and respectful for all involved.

As momentum continues to grow nationwide, San Antonio’s community is being called to stand together—not only to expand the movement, but to take a decisive stand against the development of the local ICE detention center.
