Traditionally, one receives the Sacrament of Reconciliation during Holy Week. During this time, it is impossible for most of us to do so.

On March 20th the Holy Father issued an Apostolic Penitentiary. It explains how the faithful who are ill or in quarantine or confined to their homes can obtain the plenary indulgence. It asks that:

“in their hearts, they detach themselves from all sin and unite themselves spiritually through the means of social communication with Mass, the recitation of the rosary, or the Stations of the Cross, or that they simply recite the Apostles’ Creed, the Lord’s Prayer, the Hail Mary, or any other prayer.”

Below is a simple prayer of Karl Rahner’s.

Pardoner

Karl Rahner

I have stood before you
on numerous occasions,
knowing my transgression,
guilty, fairly convicted.
You reach out mercifully,
drawing my regret toward you
with a generous reception.
In that moment of pardon
the falseness in my life
dissolves in your tenderness.

Today, I accept the divine pardon offered to me.
