About the Sisters of Charity of the lncarnate Word, San Antonio

The Sisters of Charity of the lncamate Word, an lnternational congregation of women religious, hail from several different countries and cultures.

The congregation was founded in 1869 when three Sisters traveled from France to Texas and founded Santa Rosa Hospital in response to the request from Bishop Claude Marie Dubuis, “Our Lord Jesus Christ, suffering in the persons of a multitude of the sick and infirm of every kind, seeks relief at your hands.” This hospital went on to become what is now known as CHRISTUS Health. Though they faced many hardships, with God’s help they persevered and soon founded schools and other hospitals. Those first Sisters believed that God wanted them to continue Jesus’ work on earth and be the human presence of God’s love to those in need. This is the foundation of the congregation’s spirituality and mission. The Sisters of Charity of the lncamate Word live out their mission through a number of ministries in the areas of health, education, elder care, pastoral care, and spirituality.

The congregation is headquartered in San Antonio, Texas, with Sisters serving in ministries throughout Mexico, Peru, lreland, and the United States.
